Privacy notice

This is the platform-level privacy notice. Each study you take part in will also have its own information sheet describing the data collected for that specific study.

What we collect

  • Your answers to the questions in each study.
  • Your age band, country and an optional self-description, if you choose to provide them.
  • A randomly generated identifier (a UUID) that lives only in your browser and is sent with each record you submit so that the research team can link your records to each other. We show you this identifier at the end of a session as a withdrawal token.

What we do not collect

  • No name, email, or contact details.
  • No cookies set by this platform.
  • No third-party trackers, advertising scripts, or social-media beacons.

Anonymous usage analytics

To understand how people are using the platform we use Fathom Analytics, a privacy-respecting analytics service. Fathom does not set cookies, anonymises IP addresses, and does not receive any of your answers or your identifier. It records page visits and a small set of named events such as "consent submitted" and "session completed" without linking those to you.

Lawful basis

We rely on your consent (Article 6(1)(a) UK GDPR) as the lawful basis for processing the data you submit through this platform. You give consent explicitly on the consent form of each study, and you can withdraw at any time using the procedure described on the withdrawal page.

Retention

Records that carry your participant identifier are retained for 12 months from the date of your last submission, after which the identifier is removed and only the de-identified aggregate is retained for ongoing analysis. Individual studies may shorten this window; the study information sheet states the applicable retention.

Storage and processors

Your submissions are stored on infrastructure operated by the research team. We use Fathom Analytics as a sub-processor for anonymous usage telemetry only; Fathom does not process any participant-entered data.

Your rights

You have the rights set out in UK GDPR Articles 15 to 22 including access, rectification, erasure (withdrawal) and portability. To exercise any of these rights, contact the research team at contact@speculative.studio.

Complaints

If you are not satisfied with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.
