Information sheet - Futures of Care

What is this study about?

This is a speculative-design study about possible near-future arrangements for care work. We will show you a small number of short, illustrated future scenarios depicting different ways that AI, scheduling systems and accountability tools might be introduced into a care setting. The futures depicted are deliberately fictional. We are interested in your views about them.

Who is running the study?

The study is led by Kyle Montague (Principal Investigator) and collaborators at Northumbria University. You can contact the research team at research@example.northumbria.ac.uk.

Why have I been invited?

We are inviting members of the public who have an interest in the future of care or in technology policy more broadly. You do not need any specialist knowledge.

What does taking part involve?

You will be shown three short scenarios. After each scenario you will answer a small set of questions: a Likert rating, an optional multi-select on themes you noticed, and an optional freetext reflection. Taking part should take approximately twelve minutes. You can stop at any time.

What data is collected?

We will record:

  • The answers you give to the questions.
  • Your age band, your country and an optional self-description, if you choose to provide them.
  • A randomly generated identifier so that we can match your consent record to your scenario responses. We will show you this identifier at the end of the session as a withdrawal token.

We will not record your name, your email address, or any contact details. We do not set cookies and we do not use third-party trackers.

How is my data stored and used?

Your responses are stored on infrastructure operated by the research team. The data will be used to inform academic publications and reports. Anonymous aggregated findings may be shared in papers, talks and public-facing summaries.

Anonymous usage analytics

To understand how people are using the platform we use Fathom Analytics, a privacy-respecting analytics service. Fathom does not set cookies, anonymises your IP address, and does not receive your answers or your identifier. It records page visits and a small set of named events such as “consent submitted” without linking those to you.

What if I want to withdraw?

You can stop at any time before submitting; no record will be created. After submitting, you can withdraw by emailing research@example.northumbria.ac.uk with your withdrawal token (shown on the confirmation page) within twelve months. We will delete the records that match your token.

What are the risks?

We do not expect taking part to cause distress. If any of the topics raised in the scenarios are difficult, the debrief page signposts support.

Ethics review

This study is in the process of being reviewed by Northumbria University’s research ethics committee. Reference details will appear here once approval is recorded.
